Story

Hanging lamp n°1–n°5

Most people know Muller Van Severen for the furniture. The duo's story actually starts with these lamps, and it starts out of necessity.

"We were working in our new home, which is an old house," Hannes Van Severen has explained. "A socket in the ceiling above the table was missing to plug in a light source, so we designed a lamp that could hang from the wall."

The first prototypes were shown at the couple's very first solo exhibition in 2011, at Valerie Traan — the Antwerp gallery of Veerle Wenes, who would later become valerie_objects' art director. The lamp is almost nothing: one continuous line with a bulb at the end of it.

Left, the lamps on a wall in five colours: one line, a bulb at the end. Right, the shade close up.

Belgian · founded 2011

Muller Van Severen was founded in 2011 by Belgian artist duo Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen. The couple have always been on an inspired quest for sculpturally interesting furniture objects, and their work sits somewhere between design and art, drawing on their passion for architecture and materials. They have won countless awards and collaborated with prestigious international museums and galleries.

A shared love of colour and materials is often the inspiration behind many of Muller Van Severen’s designs. The designer duo is constantly seeking new ways to present the natural beauty of the materials they use, striving to give the materials their own distinct presence.
