Story

Arch Table

The Arch tables are a Scandinavian reading of the Japanese tray table, and specifically of the incense boxes of the Edo era — a lid, a base, and a shape that works whether it is carrying something or not.

Three sizes, several functions, one outline. The tray lifts off the frame.

Handcrafted, in the studio's usual materials: brass, marble, oak, steel.

Designed by Kristina Dam

Danish · studio founded 2012

Kristina Dam founded her Copenhagen studio in 2012. She trained as a graphic designer at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 2007, and came to furniture from that direction rather than from cabinetmaking.

The background shows in the work. Pieces are drawn with the flatness and precision of graphics, then given weight in brass, marble, oak, steel and glass. The studio describes the intention as letting art and interior design meet inside the same object.

The result moves easily between function and sculpture — tables, benches and coat racks alongside objects made only to be looked at. Proportion carries most of the expression; ornament is almost entirely absent.

About Kristina Dam

Founded in Copenhagen in 2012, Kristina Dam Studio makes sculptural furniture where interior design and graphic art meet.

Kristina Dam, a graphic designer trained at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen, started the studio in 2012 with a series of limited-edition illustrations. Furniture, textiles and sculpture followed, on the idea that art and interior design belong together.

The studio calls its approach sculptural minimalism: monochrome, architectural, closely detailed. Arches and architecture run through the Curved, Grid, Collector and Outline series, in materials left much as they are.
