Elio Martinelli

Elio Martinelli ran Martinelli Luce in Lucca and designed much of what the company produced from the 1950s onward.

Serpente, from 1965, is his best known piece: a flexible arm that holds any position it is pushed into, so the lamp is arranged by hand rather than adjusted by mechanism. The name describes both the shape and the way it is used.

It is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Martinelli Luce still makes it as a table and a floor version.
