Bruno Munari

Bruno Munari was an artist, graphic designer and writer who spent his life on the question of how objects and images teach, much of it in books for children.

Falkland, designed for Artemide in 1964, is barely a manufactured object. A tube of white elastic mesh is held open by seven metal rings of different sizes; the weight of the rings alone pulls the mesh into shape as it hangs.

It ships flat and becomes a lamp only when suspended — the form is a consequence of gravity rather than a decision about styling.
