The PLOPP stool is an original, iconic object made in FiDU. It is a flagship of Zieta Studio and a symbol of Oskar Zięta’s research into the properties and possibilities of metal. The “Polish Air-Pumped Folk Object” proves how the artistic aspects of the design can be summarized in highly advanced engineering forms. Winner of the
Red Dot Design Award 2008, the German Design Council Award 2008,
and the
Forum AID Award 2009
. PLOPP is a manifesto of the FiDU technology and the “controlled loss of control” process. Two ultra-thin steel sheets are welded together around their edges and inflated under high pressure, deforming a 2.5D flat form into a 3D object.
The colours visible on the screen may be presented differently depending on your monitor settings and screen resolution. Therefore we cannot guarantee an exact match between the colours you see on the screen and the colours of the actual products.

Story

FiDU

Oskar Zięta is a Polish architect and process designer who developed his method while researching the stabilisation of sheet metal at ETH Zurich.

That research became FiDU: two thin sheets of steel are welded together and then inflated with compressed air until they take on a third dimension. The process, rather than the drawing, settles the final form — so no two pieces come out quite the same.

The Plopp stool of 2008 was the first object to make the method public, and the Tafla mirrors extended it into organic, liquid-like surfaces. His work is held by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Left, a Tafla mirror over a shelf. Right, three of them on a dark wall. The air decides the surface, so no two come out the same.

About Zieta

From Wrocław, Zieta Studio inflates sheet metal with its patented FiDU process into mirrors, stools and sculpture.

Zieta Studio works from Wrocław in Poland around one invention: FiDU, or free internal pressure deformation, patented by Oskar Zięta. Two laser-cut sheets of metal are welded at the edge and then inflated with air.

What comes out is hollow, light, strong and never quite repeatable — mirrors, stools, tables and sculpture in steel, copper and aluminium. The studio's work is held by the Centre Pompidou and MoMA.
