Story

Metro Lamps

In 2017 the Milan–Brussels architecture studio Piovenefabi paid tribute to the Milan metro with a much-discussed show at the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Its highlight was a floor lamp that reproduced the metro's iconic handrail — a gallery piece, not a product.

valerie_objects turned it into a collection. The floor lamp, originally in the metro's red, is now also made in three further colours drawn from the same line.

Piovenefabi then took the original apart into its basic forms and reassembled them as three table lamps and a pendant. La uno, la due, la tre, la quattro — the same handrail, counted out.

Left, the floor lamp in the metro's red — the handrail, lit. Right, the tube itself: piovenefabi for valerie_objects.

Italian / Belgian · Metro Lamps, 2017

Piovenefabi is an architecture studio working between Milan and Brussels.

In 2017 the studio paid tribute to the Milan metro with a much-discussed show at the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Its highlight was a floor lamp that reproduced the metro's iconic handrail — a gallery piece rather than a product.

valerie_objects turned that piece into the Metro Lamps collection. The floor lamp, originally in the metro's red, is now made in three further colours drawn from the same line, and the studio deconstructed the original into its basic forms and reassembled them as three table lamps and a pendant.

About Valerie Objects

A Belgian design label, valerie_objects asks designers like Muller Van Severen to give daily objects their beauty back.
