Story

Alu Chair & Alu Bench

Muller Van Severen designed the Alu Chair in 2015 as an outdoor chair for Anne Holtrop's Bahrain pavilion at the World Expo in Milan. It was meant for a courtyard, not a catalogue.

It has since become one of the pieces architects reach for first — light enough to move with one hand, and unmistakably the work of this duo. Although it was conceived for outdoors, most of them have ended up inside. The colours are applied in a UV-protective lacquer so they keep their brightness either way.

The Alu Bench came afterwards, taking the same graphic language and stretching it into an elongated form: aluminium frame, lacquered seat, four shades — ivory, green, alu and pink.

Left, the colour range laid out — the carefully chosen lacquers the chair is known for. Right, two of them around a table.

Belgian · founded 2011

Muller Van Severen was founded in 2011 by Belgian artist duo Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen. The couple have always been on an inspired quest for sculpturally interesting furniture objects, and their work sits somewhere between design and art, drawing on their passion for architecture and materials. They have won countless awards and collaborated with prestigious international museums and galleries.

A shared love of colour and materials is often the inspiration behind many of Muller Van Severen’s designs. The designer duo is constantly seeking new ways to present the natural beauty of the materials they use, striving to give the materials their own distinct presence.
