Story

Potence & Applique à Volet Pivotant

Charlotte Perriand joined Le Corbusier's studio in 1927 and worked for seven decades afterwards. Her lamps are the most economical objects in the Nemo catalogue.

The Potence Pivotante of 1938 is two black tubes assembled into an inverted L. The arm doubles as the cable route and the whole thing swings from a single wall fixing. She took the idea from a sailing boom.

The Applique à Volet Pivotant does the same job with one component more: a hinged shutter that swings across the front, so the same fitting gives direct light, reflected light, or none at all. There is no switch to find in the dark — the adjustment is the object moving.

Left, a wall of them with every shutter set to a different angle. Right, one above a mirror, shutter open.

About Nemo Lighting

Founded in Milan in 1993, Nemo reissues lamps by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand alongside work by living designers.

Franco Cassina founded Nemo in Milan in 1993. Part of the collection is archive work — lamps by Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Franco Albini, Vico Magistretti and Kazuhide Takahama, kept in production rather than left to history.

The rest comes from designers working now, among them Mario Bellini, Álvaro Siza, Jean Nouvel and Arihiro Miyake. The company is Italian and is owned by Federico Palazzari.
