Story

Nesso & Nessino

Giancarlo Mattioli designed Nesso with the Bologna architects' group Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Città Nuova, and Artemide put it into production in 1967.

The lamp is a single injection-moulded shell — a wide mushroom cap on four legs — made in one operation. It belongs to the decade in which the first uses of plastics redrew the domestic landscape, and it was an argument as much as an object: industrial moulding could produce something worth keeping, at a price that put it in ordinary homes.

Nessino reinterprets the same lines in a smaller, more versatile body, keeping the expressive shape of the original. Nesso is in the collection of MoMA.

Left, the orange shell in a room it was made for — in 1967 plastic in the house was still an argument. Right, from an Artemide catalogue photograph: the two sizes side by side.

About Artemide

Founded in Milan in 1960, Artemide shapes light around people — Tolomeo, Tizio and Eclisse among its classics.

Ernesto Gismondi founded Artemide in Milan in 1960. The catalogue reads as a history of post-war Italian lighting: Vico Magistretti's Eclisse, Richard Sapper's Tizio, and the Tolomeo drawn by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina.

The company works to a philosophy it calls The Human Light — light made for people rather than for its own effect. Design and production are run from Pregnana Milanese, just outside Milan.
