Mario Botta

Mario Botta is a Swiss architect from Ticino, known for buildings in brick and stone banded in strong horizontal courses.

The Shogun lamps he designed for Artemide in 1986 bring that language indoors. A perforated metal cylinder is painted with black and white stripes, and the pattern breaks up the light while doubling as the structure.

Botta trained with Le Corbusier's office and with Louis Kahn early in his career, and his built work includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
