No Welding, No Heat, No Filler

Jonas Trampedach designed the Rivet series for Frama in 2011. The construction is the whole idea.

Sheets of raw aluminium are laser-cut flat, then joined at right angles with rivets hammered by hand in a cold-forming process he developed for the series — no welding, no heat, no filler.

The corner of the Rivet Case. Two flat sheets, one right angle, and four rivets doing the entire job of holding it.

The method is the decoration

Because the way it was made stays visible in the finished object, the rivets read as the only ornament. Nothing is filled, sanded back or painted over.

Rivet Side Table — a single sheet folded into a half-round and riveted to a flat top. In a bare room it looks less like furniture than like a piece of the room that was bent upward.

The series covers a side table, a case, a typecase and shelving — all from the same sheet, the same fold, the same rivet.

Left, the Rivet Box Table in glass by a window. Right, the Rivet Shelf holding almost nothing, which is when it looks best.
